SA Sailing Academy respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect when you use this website, book a course or contact us, why we collect it, who we share it with and what your rights are under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).

What we collect
- Contact details of the person making a booking or sending a question: name, email address and phone number.
- Student details for each person booked on a course: name, date of birth, sailing experience and the boat they will sail.
- Medical conditions and allergies that you choose to tell us about, so that our instructors can keep students safe on and off the water.
- Booking and payment records: the course, dates, fees, deposits and balances. Card payments are handled by our payment providers; we never see or store your card number.
- Messages you send us through the website, by email or by phone.
- Website usage: cookies and similar technology, as described below.
Children
Many of our students are under 18. When a parent or guardian books a course for a child, they give us the child’s details and consent to us using them for the purposes in this policy.
Why we use it
- To manage your booking, take payments and send confirmations, balance reminders and course information.
- To keep students safe, including sharing relevant medical information with the instructors running the course.
- To record course results and issue certificates of competence, which may involve sharing a student’s name and results with SA Sailing.
- To answer your questions and follow up on enquiries.
- To meet our legal and accounting obligations.
We only send marketing messages if you have agreed to receive them, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run the academy, and only as far as they need it:
- Payment providers (Yoco and PayFast) to process deposits and balances.
- Google, for our booking calendars, records and the reviews shown on this website.
- Our email provider, to send booking emails and certificates.
- Our web hosting provider, which stores this website and its data.
- SA Sailing, for course certification.
Some of these providers store information outside South Africa. Where they do, we rely on them to protect it to a standard comparable to POPIA.
Cookies
This website uses essential cookies to make booking and checkout work. With your permission, given through the cookie banner, it may also use cookies to understand how the site is used. You can change your cookie choices at any time using the cookie icon on the page.
How long we keep it
We keep booking and student records for as long as needed to provide our courses and certificates, and to meet legal and tax requirements. Medical information is kept only as long as it is needed for student safety. Questions that do not lead to a booking are deleted when they are no longer needed.
Your rights
You may ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Contact our information officer using the details above. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Information Regulator at inforegulator.org.za.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
